Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
ALP is found in liver, bile ducts, bone, and placenta. Elevated in bile duct obstruction, bone growth or disease, and some liver conditions. Often ordered with GGT to pinpoint liver vs bone origin.

What is the ALP Test?
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) is an enzyme found in the liver, bile ducts, and bones. Elevated ALP can indicate bile duct obstruction, liver disease, or bone disorders. The source of elevation is determined by testing other markers alongside it — if GGT is also high, it's likely liver; if calcium is abnormal, it's likely bone.
Why Should You Take This Test?
Elevated ALP with GGT suggests liver/bile duct origin. Elevated ALP with normal GGT may indicate bone source.
Who Should Get Tested?
Suspected Bile Duct Obstruction
ALP is the most sensitive marker for biliary obstruction.
Bone Disease Assessment
Elevated in Paget's disease, bone metastases.
Growing Children
ALP is normally higher in children (from bone growth).
Liver Function Screening
Part of the complete liver panel.
